Ed Bethell - Group 1 winning trainer with Regional
From a young age, Edward Bethell was destined for horseracing, being nurtured at his family's Thorngill Stables in North Yorkshire's racing hub, Middleham.
Although his 6ft 4in stature dashed his jockey dreams, he pursued training. After earning three A-Levels from Stowe School, Edward gained invaluable experience with renowned figures:
- He started with bloodstock agent James Delahooke, who discovered champion Dancing Brave.
- Learned under William Haggas, trainer of elite horses like Mukhadram and Dancing Rain.
- Worked closely with his father, James, at Thorngill, delving into various roles from riding to managing race entries.
- Broadened his horizons at the US auction house Fasig-Tipton and the prestigious Coolmore Stud in Ireland.
- In Australia, Edward served under the legendary Gai Waterhouse, engaging in diverse roles from handling yearlings to managing online content.
Edward's impressive portfolio includes roles as assistant trainer to Charlie Hills, working with sprinter Battaash, managing a stable of 120 horses with Francois Rohaut in France, and more recently, joining forces with Robert Cowell near Newmarket.
With a keen grasp on the significance of clear communication and the digital age's role in horseracing, Edward aims to build on his father's 46-year legacy, renowned for winning significant races with modestly-priced horses.
Ed has already hit the jackpot with having a Group One winner REGIONAL in only his second year in training! We believe he will become one of the best trainers in the country!
Group 1 Winning Trainer.
Karl is a vastly experienced and highly successful trainer who has worked his way up to the top after starting training with just a handful of horses in the late 1980s. Strong year-on-year progression saw Karl move to the impressive Spigot Lodge in Middleham, and Karl has never looked back. Spigot is ideally situated between the famous Middleham High and Low Moor gallops and is steeped in racing history. Indeed, Karl has trained many Group winners from Spigot Lodge such as Group 2 Dante winner and Epsom Derby runner-up Libertarian - a horse that highlights Karl's ability to make an impact in the very best races on a confined budget. Two-time Group 1 winner Odeliz was bought for just €22,000 as a yearling from Deauville before being sold privately for £1,000,000 at the December Mares Sales in Newmarket - another amazing result for Karl with a cheaply bought horse.
For more than 20 years, Nicky and his dedicated team have produced National Hunt horses of the highest calibre. Whether a Grade One contender or a young bumper prospect, the same patience and attention to detail goes into getting the absolute best out of every animal housed at Greystoke. More than 800 winners and £5 million in prize money prove that what we do works remarkably well.
In Sussex's racing circles, the Moore family name resonates deeply. Gary Moore, son of the noted Brighton trainer, Charlie Moore, stands tall as one of the country's premier dual-purpose trainers.
All in the Family
With steadfast support from his wife Jayne, a former accomplished amateur jockey, and the daily contributions of their children Jamie, Josh, and Hayley, Gary helms one of the most industrious racing teams. Remarkably, for years he achieved outstanding results from a self-constructed yard across from Brighton Racecourse. In 2007, Gary transitioned to the upscale Cisswood Racing Stables near Horsham, now his principal yard. This expansive facility, spanning 180 acres of picturesque countryside and forest, boasts state-of-the-art training amenities and can house up to 150 racehorses. Its vast grounds also allow for daily horse turnout to graze as needed.
Gary Moore is undoubtedly one of the best-purpose trainers in the country!
From an early age, Olly’s future lay in the racing industry. Originally, Olly’s ambitions were in the saddle. He attended Pony Club, hunted and led his Mum’s string before riding in point-to-points and progressing to riding as an amateur under rules. He rode 30 winners before he inevitably outgrew his breeches!
Once Olly decided to train, he spent a year with Alan King. He then moved to Ireland, joining Gordon Elliott as an Assistant Trainer. Olly spent four seasons with Gordon, tasting success at the highest level. During Olly’s time, Gordon won several Grade 1’s and numerous Festival winners and was all topped off by Don Cossack winning the 2016 Gold Cup.
In 2017, the time came for Olly to take up the reins himself. Four years into his training career, Olly has trained over 300 winners, won over £2.5 million in prize money and is a Grade 1 winning trainer!
Johnston Racing is one of the top racehorse training yards in Britain. It was set up by Mark Johnston in 1987 and led by him until his son Charlie took over the training licence at the start of 2023, having been Assistant Trainer for several years as well as sharing the licence with Mark in 2022.
In 2009 the stable became the first in the country to send out more than 200 winners on the Flat in a year and has gone on to repeat that feat a further nine times to date. Uniquely, the Johnstons have had more than 100 winners in 30 consecutive seasons, achieving success in British and Irish Classics, and numerous Group One races.
In August 2018 Mark became the winningmost trainer in British racing history when he saddled his 4,194th winner, and four years later, with Mark and Charlie holding a joint licence, Johnston Racing had its 5,000th winner.
